Letter of Invitation: Inclusion of Mental Health Nurses Who Experience Disability

Are you a Mental Health Nurse in Canada?
Have you experienced a disability during your nursing practice?
Who may Participate?
• Mental Health Nurse who self-identify with a disability or disabilities are invited to participate. You are welcome to participate if you are currently experiencing symptoms or if you are symptom free.
• You may work in clinical practice, education, and/or administration within Canada.
• Some participants may have disclosed disability; however, disclosure is not required to participate in this project.
• Disability is defined and experienced in many ways.
For this study disability will refer to “any impairment, including a physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairment—or a functional limitation—whether permanent, temporary or episodic in nature, or evident or not, that, in interaction with a barrier, hinders a person’s full and equal participation in society” (Government of Canada, 2020).
Some nurses enter the profession with a disability while the majority experience a disability during their career including those who are injured while at work (Neal-Boylan, 2013).
The research study is qualitative. Interpretive Description will be utilized to answer the research questions:
• What are the perspectives and experiences of mental health nurses who experience disability?
• What practices facilitate or limit the inclusion of mental health nurses who experience disabilities?
This research is being conducted as there is limited literature available from the perspectives of mental health nurses who experience disabilities. Lessons learned will be used to inform accommodations, supports, and policies.
If you agree to take part in this study, a member of the research team would meet with you to talk about your experiences as a mental health nurse and how you have been impacted by disability, how you have coped with these experiences, and also ask questions about your educational experience and transition into nursing practice.
A copy of the interview questions can be shared with you prior to meeting. The interviews would be at a time of your convenience remotely through Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Each interview will be about 60 to 90 minutes. The interviews will be audio/video-recorded. The purpose of the recording is to generate a transcript and to assist with data analysis.
Confidentiality will be maintained using a false name. Your name or any other identifying information will not be published or shared. Only members of the research team will be aware of your identity.
Findings plan to be published in a peer reviewed journal and presented at local, national, and international conferences. A podcast, posters, and infographics may also be created to share information.

Vaccine Hesitancy Virtual Simulations are now available for Healthcare Providers in Manitoba
The Nurse Practitioner Association of Manitoba, in collaboration with the Manitoba Health Care Professional Associations Coalition, ARNM, and SpiritRx, and with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, have created four (4) Virtual Simulation Experiences (VSEs) to assist heath care promoter and providers with addressing vaccine hesitancy or resistance.
Choose your own adventure!
You can choose the simulation that best reflects your experiences with vaccine hesitancy/resistance or complete all four:
- General Vaccine Hesitancy
- Northern Communities
- Trust and Confidentiality
- Angry Deescalating Patient
Each simulation will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
You will also have the option to enter your name for a weekly draw of a $50 gift card upon completion!
