Welcome to 2020: The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife

Nurses across the globe are ringing in the New Year with added pride and promise this year. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared 2020, our year - The Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Recognizing that nurses are the bridge of healthcare, connecting patients and communities with today’s complex healthcare system, the WHO is spearheading The Year of the Nurse and Midwife as part of a larger WHO initiative to help bring more adequate healthcare to everyone, everywhere.

As noted by WHO Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the role of nursing will be further amplified and promoted in 2020, which also marks the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, who is often referred to as the founder of modern nursing.

Throughout 2020, your Association and other nursing and healthcare organizations, including the Midwives Association of Manitoba, will be working together to raise the profile, showcase the positive health impacts, and honour and celebrate our nurses and midwives throughout the province.

Adopting the International Council of Nursing’s (ICN) 2020 theme, ‘Nurses a Voice to Lead’ the Association plans to engage with nurses, leaders and general public to promote nursing excellence, infuse leadership and foster innovation.

For example, the profession of nursing has numerous specialties, allowing nurses to work in a variety of roles and settings – from advanced practice nursing, ambulatory nursing and care management to behavioral health, medical-surgical, critical-care, pediatric, obstetric and oncology nursing – as well as in nursing quality, education, informatics, research and more.

Over the course of the year, we will be working with our nursing specialty groups to promote and showcase their role and value in our health care system. Stay connected to the Association so as not to miss any of the exciting news and events to celebrate YOU and our profession.
