Celebrating Perioperative Nurses Week
Media Release – November 12, 2019
November 10 – 16, 2019 is a special time to openly celebrate a nursing specialty that often lies hidden behind the operating room doors. This year’s theme Perioperative Nursing: Unified Voice for Excellence in Patient Safety demonstrates the crucial role these professionals have during a patient’s surgical journey.
“The Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba is pleased to celebrate perioperative nurses this week,” said Mary Smith, executive director of ARNM. “We welcome the opportunity to work with our specialty nursing groups to highlight the different roles nurses fill and the time they take to become experts in their field.”
Perioperative nurses care for patients during one of their most vulnerable moments in their healthcare experience. A professional perioperative nurse becomes the patient’s voice, while working within interdisciplinary teams to ensure the patient’s most basic needs are met during surgery.
“It’s important to shine a spotlight on perioperative nursing and recognize the nurses who take the time to become specialists in this area. Just as importantly, Perioperative Nursing Week gives us the opportunity to bring awareness and comfort to the public so that they know if they or their loved ones need surgery, there are highly trained perioperative nurses with them during the whole experience. Caring for them, seeing to their needs and giving them a voice,” said Dawn Affleck, president of the Manitoba Operating Room Nurses Association (MORNA).
